Electronic signature vs digital signature: what's the difference?
“Electronic signature” and “digital signature” are often used interchangeably, but technically they mean different things. Understanding the difference helps you pick the right tool for each document.
Electronic signature
This is the broad concept: any electronic data a person uses to sign. It can be a signature drawn on screen, an acceptance click or a code. It's valid for the vast majority of contracts between private parties and is what Firmiu uses, reinforced with an audit trail.
Digital signature
This is a specific type of electronic signature that uses cryptography and a certificate issued by an accredited authority. It offers the highest level of identification and, in some countries, is required for certain government procedures.
Which one do you need?
For service contracts, leases, commercial agreements and most day-to-day documents, an electronic signature is enough and far quicker. A certified digital signature is reserved for official procedures that explicitly require it.
If your goal is to sign and close agreements fast, friction-free and legally backed, an electronic signature with an audit trail is the practical option.
