Types of electronic signature in Ecuador
Simple electronic signature
Electronic data that identifies the signer and expresses approval of the content. It is valid for private agreements; Firmiu's audit trail backs it with IP, device, date and verification.
Certified electronic signature
Backed by a certificate issued by entities accredited before ARCOTEL (such as the Civil Registry). It fully equals a handwritten signature and is required for certain public procedures.
What makes a signature valid in Ecuador?
An electronic signature has the same effects as a handwritten one when it is attributable to the signer. Firmiu documents every signature with IP, device, location and a verification code.

- Where do you get a certified electronic signature in Ecuador?
- From certification entities accredited before ARCOTEL, such as the Civil Registry. For private contracts it isn't mandatory: an electronic signature with audit evidence suffices.
- Does the SRI require electronic signatures for my contracts?
- No. Electronic invoicing before the SRI uses certificates specific to that system; your private commercial contracts don't need to go through the SRI.
- Is an electronically signed document admissible in an Ecuadorian court?
- Yes. The COGEP admits digital documents as evidence, and the law equates data messages with written documents. The audit trail proves authorship and integrity.
- Can I sign a lease agreement online?
- Yes. Leases don't require a public deed (save special cases), so they can be executed electronically with full validity.
